I hesitated a long time to restart my writing habit. Having blogged occasionally — both for work and for myself — and written a few articles in the past, I always wondered if anyone would be interested in what I have to say now.
Do I have anything worthwhile to write about? Would I have enough to write about to sustain a regular posting schedule? Would I have the time and energy to write on a regular basis? Would anyone bother to subscribe to my updates?
Then, eight months ago, I quit employed work and refocused my attention on my artistic pursuits. (I avoid saying that I “retired early”, preferring to look at it as having “refocused my creativity”.) I soon discovered the many opportunities offered by Surface Pattern Design, an occupation I had only vaguely been aware of but which turned out to be right down my alley.
Once I had entered that field and started to convert some of my many design ideas into patterns, I started to notice that my design practice, and thus my path into and development in pattern design, were quite different from those of most other pattern designers. I tend to build my own software tools to create my designs, based on applications I built in my past career as scientist and communicator.
This made me realise that I’m in quite a unique position, and that sharing my uncommon experience may actually be of interest to others. You may find value in what I have to share if you are an artist or surface designer yourself, or maybe a recently refocused creative looking for encouragement, or just interested in designs founded in science, mathematics and visual perception.
So, that’s what this reFocused newsletter is going to be about… I think. I don’t want to promise too much here at the outset, and I’m sure my writing will evolve with time. But it is quite safe to say that we will cover pattern design and the thinking behind some of my patterns, as well as the life and work of a refocused creative.
